Embedded in LA, by Cybil Weigel |
Overview of the film Embedded in LA:
The film, Embedded in LA began with my interest
in
communities,
music, and video. I had been a volunteer, working as a teacher’s assistant
in a 2nd grade elementary school for two years in a low-income neighborhood.
I decided to bring in a camera crew to document the school and the surrounding
community. At the same time, I researched the history of documentary film, contemporary
video techniques, and popular music culture. I then began acquiring hours of
footage bonding with the community as an incognito maker. I called this role
being an embedded designer.
We live in a culture where we do not have the attention
spans for long and extensive viewing times. We have changed our viewing habits
all together.

We
need something sleeker, slimmer, faster, and more
potent infused into our routines. I looked at popular
bi-coastal music trends, graffiti, comics, and
MTV. I found that there a layer missing: the voice
of the maker --my interpretation of both verbal
and visual language. Inspired by a reading of Understanding
Comics, by Scott McCloud, I moved to re-invigorate
the cartoon bubble. To break it apart and to have
it react with the person being filmed.
Embedded
is the title of my film, reflecting my intimate
participation with my Los Angeles community,
my production team, my final product. To learn

work a reality.
