I
fell upon the ablino myth this past summer, it was my drunken
roommate who told me the story. Someone had told her about a
cult of albino people who lived in Miamisburg, she couldn't
recall the story at all. What she told me was about how
one night she tripped on acid and happened to be driving around
in Miamisburg in the wee hours of the morninig and every car
she pulled up next to had at least one albino in it. This inspired
my series.
I
was intrigued by the story because I knew a bit about Miamisburg,
it didn't seem like the kind of place that would have a cult,
especially one that consisted solely of albinos, so I attempted
to illustrate the story or at least some of the characters
that I pictured in my mind. I imagined that if there was this
so-called cult of albinos that lived in Miamisburg, the members
were probably mistreated so badly that the only time they
could freely move around the town would be the wee hours of
the morning and also the light wouldn't be as harsh so as
not to hurt their sensitive eyes.
I
chose to paint the albinos as I would imagine they would feel
in a town full of football junkies and
strippers, desolate and cold and unfinished. They're trapped
within a community that doesn't accept them and surrounded
by people who are too afraid to look. The final piece
is titled Miguel or untitled mouth...
